Steering exact penalty methods for nonlinear programming
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper reviews, extends and analyzes a new class of penalty methods for nonlinear optimization. These methods adjust the penalty parameter dynamically; by controlling the degree of linear feasibility achieved at every iteration, they promote balanced progress toward optimality and feasibility. In contrast with classical approaches, the choice of the penalty parameter ceases to be a heuristic and is determined, instead, by a subproblem with clearly defined objectives. The new penalty update strategy is presented in the context of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) and sequential linear-quadratic programming (SLQP) methods that use trust regions to promote convergence. The paper concludes with a discussion of penalty parameters for merit functions used in line search methods. Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309. Superlinearly convergent exact penalty projected structured Hessian updating schemes for constrained nonlinear least squares: asymptotic analysis
We present a structured algorithm for solving constrained nonlinear least squares problems, and establish its local two-step Q-superlinear convergence. The approach is based on an adaptive structured scheme due to Mahdavi-Amiri and Bartels of the exact penalty method of Coleman and Conn for nonlinearly constrained optimization problems. The structured adaptation also makes use of the ideas of N...

In this paper an exact penalty line search is introduced for solving constrained nonlinear programing. By this method it is possible to solve some problems with combining penalty method and SQP method, and in any iteration for producing new stepone can uses linear search and solves unconstrained optimization by exact penalty function. In this method a linear programming subproblem with trust ar...

متن کاملA line search exact penalty method using steering rules
Line search algorithms for nonlinear programming must include safeguards to enjoy global convergence properties. This paper describes an exact penalization approach that extends the class of problems that can be solved with line search SQP methods. In the new algorithm, the penalty parameter is adjusted at every iteration to ensure sufficient progress in linear feasibility and to promote accept...
متن کاملA Filter Method with Unified Step Computation for Nonlinear Optimization
We present a filter linesearch method for solving general nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problems. The method is of the filter variety, but uses a robust (always feasible) subproblem based on an exact penalty function to compute a search direction. This contrasts traditional filter methods that use a (separate) restoration phase designed to reduce infeasibility until a feasible subproblem...
